The journey commences at the iconic Rovos Rail Station in the heart of Pretoria where you will be greeted with warm hospitality. The station's museum, which houses a fascinating collection of railway artifacts and memorabilia, offers a glimpse into the rich history of South African rail travel.

Following the museum visit, a luxury coach awaits to transfer guests to the nearby Kookrus Station, where the elegant Rovos Rail train stands ready for embarkation. As you settle into your lavish suites and carriages, the train departs Kookrus Station, marking the official start of the unforgettable journey.

As the train ventures into the sweeping plains of the High Veld, the choice is yours - simply relax and enjoy the views of observation cars, partake in afternoon tea in the comfort of the lounge - both. These elegant spaces offer panoramic views of the picturesque South African landscape, allowing you to be fully immersed in the beauty of the surroundings. The ever-changing scenery, from rolling hills and vast grasslands to distant mountain ranges and quaint rural settlements, provides a captivating backdrop for the afternoon tea experience.

Day 2: Kimberley – The Diamond Capital

The day begins with a leisurely breakfast onboard the luxurious train as it winds through the picturesque South African landscape towards Kimberley, a city steeped in history and synonymous with the diamond rush that once captivated the world.

Kimberley, once a dusty frontier town, was transformed into a bustling metropolis by the discovery of diamonds in the late 19th century. The city's fortunes were forever intertwined with these precious gems, and its legacy as the diamond capital of South Africa remains to this day. Some of the world's most famous and sought-after diamonds, such as the Cullinan Diamond (the largest diamond ever discovered) and the Star of Africa, originated from the rich diamond mines surrounding Kimberley. The Kimberley mine produced 95% of the world's diamonds in the 1870s and 1880s, the “Big Hole” yielding about 14.5 million carats of diamonds alone over its 43-year operational history. The mine has continued to yield some exceptional stones since working was restarted in 1945.

Returning to the train, be treated to a sumptuous lunch as the journey continues. The afternoon offers a chance to relax and reflect on the morning's discoveries, perhaps while enjoying the passing scenery or conversing with fellow travelers.

As the sun sets, the train glides towards its next destination. The evening brings another opportunity to indulge in the train's renowned culinary offerings. Guests are invited to dress formally for a gourmet dinner, savoring exquisite dishes and fine wines as the train travels through the enchanting South African night. The day concludes with a sense of wonder and anticipation for the adventures ahead.

Day 3: Matjiesfontein & The Karoo

The day begins with a delightful breakfast served as you take in the awe-inspiring, stark beauty of the Karoo, a semi-desert landscape that boasts a rich geological history. The Karoo's unique biodiversity and dramatic scenery provide a feast for the eyes, making breakfast an even more memorable experience. The train journey continues, allowing you to further appreciate the vast expanse of the Karoo.

As lunchtime approaches, the train makes a scheduled stop. Adventurous guests have the opportunity to disembark at Whitehill Siding. From here, you can enjoy a scenic 5km walk to the charming Victorian-era village of Matjiesfontein. This walk allows for a closer look at the Karoo landscape and a chance to stretch your legs after the train journey. Matjiesfontein is a true step back in time. The village is home to a fascinating museum filled with historic artifacts that tell the story of the region and its people. You can also explore a collection of vintage automobiles and railway carriages, providing a glimpse into transportation history.

After the Matjiesfontein excursion, it's time to rejoin the train and indulge in a relaxing afternoon tea service. As you savor your tea, the train enters a series of tunnels, including a remarkable 13.5km stretch. This engineering marvel offers a unique experience as you travel through the heart of the mountain. As the evening draws closer, you'll be treated to an elegant dinner onboard the train. The culinary experience is enhanced by the scenic views as the train descends towards Worcester, marking the end of another unforgettable day on your Rovos Rail journey.
